Some people have commented that they don’t think God answers prayers. Some think He will only answer prayers if they are for things He already wanted anyway — consistent with His Plan. Still others claim that “He answers all prayers, but sometimes the answer is NO!”
I say that these are all cop-outs. Deep down, these people doubt God’s ability to answer any prayer. They may even doubt that He exists!
Let’s take a look at what Jesus says on the subject!
In Matthew 21: 19-22
19And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
20And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
21Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
22And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
Some may say that here, Jesus was speaking exclusively to those in His presence. Not so fast, Doubting Thomases! This story of the fig tree is repeated in Mark 11.
20And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Emphasis added. “Whosoever”. Not “Whosoever stands before me”, not “whosoever’s name happens to be written on this scroll”, but “whosoever”. Anybody. You, me, Aunt Carrie. Whosoever.
Now, you may be wondering to yourself, “Shirlee, if you genuinely believe that Jesus will do what you pray for, why aren’t you simply praying yourself? Why isn’t it done yet?”
Jesus added in Matthew 18 a condition:
19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
That’s right, Jesus wants more than one person agreeing in prayer. That’s why churches have their entire congregations pray when a member is ill, you see.
If Jesus didn’t want people to pray together for things, then a pastor could do it all by himself!
So, we see that Jesus made us a solid promise: He will do what we ask, if multiple people pray for the same thing with belief that they will receive it.
Nowhere does Jesus say, “I will do whatever you ask, as long as you ask for things that I’ve already decided I want. Oh, and I’m not going to tell you my Plan, you’ll just have to guess.”
Nowhere does Jesus say, “I will do whatever you ask, if I think it’s best for you. If I don’t, then I won’t.”
Nowhere does Jesus say, “I will only answer some prayers of the faithful, not all.”
The three arguments presented at the beginning of this post directly contradict the Bible, and are therefore not valid views of God and prayer.
If you believe any of these things, why not at least admit the reason . . . that you doubt God is who He says He is? Why blaspheme His name with these comments?
